DDT
DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) whose insecticidal properties were discovered in 1939, kills a wide variety of insects on contact. It has long been known to be carcinogenic to humans, and has toxic effects on birds and fishes that eat insects.
Although the pesticide DDT has been banned in the U.S. since 1972, it is so slow to break down that it's residue is still found in many foods grown in the U.S.
