MANHATTAN COCKTAIL

The Manhattan cocktail consists of whiskey, sweet vermouth and a dash of bitters.

It was created around 1890 and named for Manhattan, a borough of New York City.  It crossed the Atlantic quickly, as the Manhattan cocktail appeared in the 1906 edition of 'Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management'.
