- Vilcek Foundation Prize for Creative Promise in the Culinary Arts Deadline: July 31, 2009
The Vilcek Foundation shall award a prize of $25,000 to a foreign-born chef, artisan, or innovator in the culinary arts who demonstrates outstanding early achievement. In addition, four finalists will receive awards of $5,000 each. Three categories of culinary arts practitioners are eligible to apply: Chefs include all those whose primary occupation is defined as cooking for others in a restaurant setting, whether as a regular chef or as a pastry chef. Private chefs are not eligible to apply. Artisans may work on a farm or have a small shop or production facility. They include confectioners, chocolatiers, cheese makers, bread bakers, charcutiers, affineurs, and others who work with food on a small scale. Producers of packaged or bulk products like pickles, jams, or crackers are ineligible for the prize. Innovators are those who have created a novel culinary-related product or object that is crucial to others’ transformative work with food. Applicant must have been born outside the United States and must have been born on or after January 1, 1971. Applicant must be a naturalized citizen or permanent resident (green card holder) of the United States and must intend to pursue a professional career in the United States.

- 2nd Annual New York State Gingerbread House Competition - Deadline: October 31, 2009
Categories of Entries: The houses will be judged in seven different categories: (1) 5-9 years old, (2) 10-13 years old, (3) 14-17 years old, (4) 18 & older, (5) Team of Two, (6) Family Group (3-4 person team: at least 2 entrants must be 12 years and younger), (7) Group (3-4 person team). Entries should have a base appropriate to the size of the gingerbread house and should not exceed 30”x30”. All entries must be on a piece of plywood or other rigid base. Construction: Any architectural structure is eligible for entry (i.e. house, train station, bridge, ship, lighthouse, etc.). Structure must be constructed mainly of gingerbread and icing. Non-visible interior supports of other materials are allowed. The entire visual display is to be made of edible materials. Cash prizes will be given to the top place in each Entry Category.

If cooking and creating recipes is your passion, you are invited to participate in our 3rd annual mushroom cooking contest. We’re a southern Oregon website, www.MadAboutMushrooms, designed to celebrate wild mushrooming on the southern Oregon coast (and elsewhere around the Pacific Northwest). We invite you to share your original recipes and show how they use mushrooms to enhance your culinary life. Recipes may use either cultivated or wild mushrooms. The type of dish is yours to choose: appetizer, soup, salad/vegetable, main dish, miscellaneous (perhaps even a dessert!). The grand prize winner will receive a locally made Port Orford Cedar plank and Salmon cookbook by Diane Morgan. Contest rules and additional information are located on the website.
