Recipes from The Inglenook Cookbook
by The Sisters of the Brethren Church (1906)
Take 2 cups of sugar, juice and grated rind of 2 lemons, 2 cups of sweet milk, 1/2 cup of butter, yolks of 4 eggs and 1 slice of bread broken fine without crust. Mix these ingredients together, put in 4 pie plates lined with pastry and bake. When done, beat the whites of the eggs with 4 tablespoonfuls of sugar and a few drops of lemon juice. Spread on top of the custards and return to the oven to brown lightly.
