KOREAN BBQ TOFU

30-Minute Vegan's Taste of the East
by Mark Reinfeld & Jennifer Murray

A meal at an authentic Korean BBQ restaurant includes the food being grilled right at the table, oftentimes with the grill being built into the table! For this recipe, the longer the tofu sits in the marinade the more flavor it will absorb.
Serves 4

Ingredients

    • 1 recipe BBQ Sauce (recipe follows)
    • 1 (14-ounce) package extra-firm tofu

    BBQ Sauce
    • 1/4 cup water
    • 1/4 cup diced yellow onion
    • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
    • 2 tablespoons agave nectar, or sweetener of choice to taste
    • 1 tablespoon peeled and minced fresh ginger
    • 2 cloves garlic
    • 1 teaspoon seeded and diced hot chile pepper, or 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, or to taste
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Directions

1. Preheat a grill. Place all of the sauce ingredients in a blender and blend until creamy. Pour into a shallow dish.

2. Slice the tofu into four cutlets and add them to the sauce. Allow them to sit in the sauce for 20 minutes or longer. Transfer the cutlets to the grill and grill until char marks appear on both sides, flipping occasionally. After grilling return the tofu to the sauce. To serve, place the tofu on a plate and drizzle with the sauce.

Variation
• Bake the tofu and BBQ sauce in a 375° F oven for 15 to 20 minutes.
