The blood orange, with it's sweet deep red colored flesh, was most likely the result of a mutation that occurred in 17th century Sicily. In most varieties of blood orange even the pulp and skin are slightly sweet, and not bitter.

TODAY IN FOOD HISTORY

1494 Columbus landed at Jamaica and met the Arawak Indians.  The Arawak used Jamaican pimento (allspice) to season and smoke meat (usually pigs), the foundation upon which Jamaican Jerk developed.

1626 Dutch explorer Peter Minuit landed on what is now Manhattan island in New York City.

1789 Montreal fixes the price and size of bread: "the white loaf of 4lbs. at 13d., or 30 sous", etc., and tells bakers they must also "mark their bread with a mark."

1854 Asa Fitch was appointed as New York state entomologist, the first such in the U.S.  He studied insects and their effects on agricultural crops.

1929 Audrey Hepburn was born (died Jan 20, 1993). Actress and humanitarian. One of her many films was 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' (1961). In her latter years she served as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

1942 War time food rationing began in the U.S.

1959 Charles Lavelle Broley died (born Dec 7, 1879). A Canadian banker and ornithologist, he was one of the first to implicate DDT in the declining hatching success of bald eagles, and the environmental dangers of pesticides.

1959 At the first Grammy Awards, 'Tequila' by the Champs won best Best Rhythm & Blues Performance for 1958.

2003 The first cloned mule was born at the University of Idaho. It was named 'Idaho Gem' (Mule Trivia)

2009 Dom DeLuise died (born Aug 1, 1933). Actor, comedian and cookbook author. 'Eat This' (1988) and 'Eat This Too!' (1997).

2012 Canada stops production of its penny.  The coins are withdrawn from circulation on February 4, 2013.
