Take 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of butter and lard. Mix well together, then add I cup of sweet milk, 2 cups of flour, 1 1/2 teaspoonfuls of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoonful of cream of tartar, and add last the well-beaten whites of 5 eggs. Do not stir much after the eggs have been added. Bake in 3 layers.
Icing:
Take 2/3 cup of sugar, 5 tablespoonfuls of milk and flavor with lemon. Boil till thick.
