MICHELLE COOPER: Next, we're going to talk about electrolytes. A balance of electrolytes is important for the normal functioning of the cells and organs of our body. The most popular electrolytes are sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate. Sometimes through excessive sweating, you may lose electrolytes, particularly sodium and potassium. It's important to replenish these and sometimes the best way to do that is through a sports drink such as this one or Gatorade. However, along with the electrolytes you get from these drinks, you also get some added sugars and flavorings; therefore, you probably want to dilute this with some water. Another time that you may lose electrolytes from your body is through chronic vomiting or diarrhea. In children, this can be especially dangerous and you want to make sure that you replenish their electrolytes with something suitable for children like Pedialyte. You never want to replenish your electrolytes with sodium or potassium tablets. You always want to eat your electrolytes from foods like bananas and oranges or through replenishment drinks like this or Gatorade. So number one, remember, if you're exercising in intense heat and sweating profusely, you may be losing some electrolytes, particularly potassium and sodium. In order to replenish those, you probably need to drink a sports drink and add some water to that. If you or your child is vomiting or has chronic diarrhea, you're probably losing some electrolytes as well. Make sure that you replenish the electrolytes in children in appropriate form such as Pedialyte. And lastly, don't replenish electrolytes with salt tablets or potassium tablets which can be very unhealthy, instead eat or drink to replenish those.
