MICHELLE COOPER: Next, we're going to talk about the Sonoma diet. The Sonoma diet was actually written by a registered dietitian, and it takes a lot of cues from the Mediterranean diet or the Mediterranean style of eating. It's high in fruits and vegetables; it's low in animal fat; it's high in fiber; and the fact that you do consume is the good fat, the monounsaturated kind or mostly from the olive oil, like the one that you see behind me. It also is okay to consume red wine while on this diet just like it is on the Mediterranean diet. Number one, when looking at this diet, we want to know: Is it a style of eating that you can sustain for a long period of time? It is. It's actually a healthy diet just like the diet of the Mediterranean. Two, does it promote a rapid rate of weight loss? This does not promote a rapid rate but a more gradual rate of weight loss. Number three, is exercise encouraged? It is. And lastly which you want to know is does this exclude any food or food groups? It does not. It restricts the amount of animal fat or red meat in the diet while increasing the amount of fish in the diet which is actually healthy. Therefore, I would recommend this diet as a healthy way of eating to sustain weight loss or to maintain your weight over a period of time.
