Competitors run, roll & somersault themselves down the steep (1:2 gradient), grassy slopes of Cooper's Hill in pursuit of a 7- 8 lb (4kg) Double Gloucester cheese. The event has been taking place for possibly hundreds of years. Documentary evidence shows that Cheese Rolling on Cooper's Hill was already an old tradition in the early 1800s. We would like to stress it is only the 2018 Cheese-Rolling that has been cancelled. Cheese-Rolling has become a victim of its own success and it’s felt that, by stopping for a year to take stock, it can hopefully resume in a fresh format, perhaps in the form of a big village fete up at the Pavilion for 2019.
