I wasn’t going to delve into local pizza places in my Key West restaurant reviews, but I prefer not to have food delivered and when I go into one particular establishment to pick up I always get smiling faces and hard working people who know my name. It’s called Big John’s Pizza in the Kmart shopping plaza. You can eat in or take out or have food delivered.
You will find a wide variety of choices on the chalk menu over the order counter from pasta dishes, to salads, to hot subs and, of course pizzas with about as many toppings as you could possibly imagine. If I eat in with friends I go for the pizza, but if I take out I go for the hot ham and cheese sub or chicken Parmesan hot sub with a side salad that would compare to any decent restaurant in town.
I have had only 1 dish that just didn’t cut it for me and that was the pasta Alfredo. The sauce is quite bland and the only way to manage it is to pour on the salt. It’s probably the source of the cheese that may require a change in vendor. I wouldn’t mind paying a bit more for a cheese upgrade to add that to my repertoire of eating possibilities as the prices in general are quite fair.
If you’ve read previous reviews you might note that I like it when I can park my car with ease when I go into a restaurant. I understand the issue with available real estate on a relatively small island especially downtown, but this spot is in a mall outside of the town center making parking a pleasant task. They have just opened a new downtown location that I will most likely not go into because of parking space, but it will make their downtown deliveries quicker.
When we are away from home on vacation there often comes a day when too much sun or shopping has laid us waste. The gut reaction will be to order from someone familiar like Dominos or Pizza Hut, but if the pizza/sub thing hits you try a local place here that will definitely satisfy. It’s Big Johns pizza in Key West, Florida!
