I guess if you like the downtown Mallory Square version of this over priced and overrated Cuban restaurant you’ll like the New Town version.
With so many small family owned and operated Cuban eateries in Key West why anyone would go to a bigger than life manufactured place like El Meson de Pepes I don’t know.
I walked into the newest El Meson for lunch and there were 4 young people behind the host desk who seemed too busy with personal conversation to seat my friend and I. We were eventually guided to a table towards the right rear section. You notice right away the décor is simply numerous pictures that allude to Cuba juxtaposed in all different directions from floor to ceiling. A relatively unfriendly and almost non-communicative server took our order.
I ordered the fish sandwich and my friend had soup. Everything was overly salted with little effort to make a palatable presentation, and for what we ordered as lunch I was displeased to pay a dinner price.
Overall I was quite unhappy with just about every aspect of my visit to the New Town El Meson de Pepes on North Roosevelt Blvd. If there were
a positive it would be that the New Town location provides ample parking. I would suggest using the parking space to go next door to Denny’s though since the food and service there is far better. I’ll let you know if things improve.
