REVIEW

I think if you have read any of my previous reviews of Chinese restaurants in Key West you will know there is no love lost here. We just don’t have the quality of flavor you get in bigger cities around the US. I have basically opted for the Thai food on the island or one of the big 3 sushi outlets here to get my Asian fare. If the food isn’t as good across the board here then I must say that Hunan Restaurant in the Sears Mall New Town Key West is a cut above when it comes to service and presentation.

The space is clean and not so overwhelmingly Chinese in the décor department and the servers do wear the white shirt, black pants and bow tie, which add a bit of class and formality that I happen to like. My co-diner was in need of a bit more spice added to her dish and they were quite amenable to bringing sauces to the table that she could try. I went with the Shrimp and lobster sauce and though not a typically flavorful dish here or anywhere, I was impressed with the size of the shrimp.

I was also happy to see a wide variety of Asian and American beers on the menu. When in Rome as they say, so Tsing Tao is always a nice way to enjoy the meal.

On some basic 101 notes; you are at a mall so parking is easy. The prices are fair and competitive with the other Chinese restaurants on the island. A little more attention could be made to the rest rooms, but in the scheme of things I won’t say it’s a major issue. Everything in the main room is pleasantly decorated, clean and well appointed. I felt comfortable here and if you just need to have Chinese food one night and you’re in one of the many New Town hotels then I would choose Hunan from the other options.
