Kiel Select Cheese Enters Premium, Naturally Aged Cheddar Category

Small Wisconsin Plant Introduces Award-Winning Product to U.S. Consumers

(Kiel, Wis.)  The term “aged to perfection” may nicely encapsulate what is happening in a small cheese plant in east-central Wisconsin.  After more than half a century in operation, this plant is finally introducing a nationally distributed product—Kiel Select™ Classic Wisconsin Cheddar cheese.

Cheese lovers will soon discover the wait was well worth it.  Kiel Select™ Cheddar cheese is produced in small batches, naturally aged and hand-selected, ensuring every package upholds the plant’s exacting standards for flavor and quality.  It is available in two varieties—sharp and extra sharp.  Both flavors are available in 10 oz. and 32 oz. chunks, and the suggested retail price is $2.99 for the 10-ounce size and $5.98 for the 32-ounce size.  Consumers can find Kiel Select™ Cheddar cheese in retailers’ dairy cases.

The artisans at the Kiel cheese facility adhere to a philosophy of taking their time, a belief that permeates virtually everything done at the plant.  The results speak for themselves.  The taste and quality of Kiel Select™ Cheddar is simply amazing.  It has a rich, complex Cheddar flavor.  Only clean dairy notes are present, with no impurities or aftertaste.  The cheese’s texture is smooth and tightly knit, making it easy to cut and prepare.  It’s never waxy or crumbly.  Kiel Select™ Cheddar cheese is an ideal cheese to eat by itself, with crackers, in a sandwich or in a favorite family recipe.

The Kiel cheesemakers’ formula for making great Cheddar is relatively simple—pride and scrutiny goes into every chunk that makes it to grocers’ shelves.  The plant starts with the highest-quality milk gathered from farmers located throughout east-central Wisconsin.  It uses a great Cheddar recipe and employs meticulous cheese-making standards.  Every batch is small in size.  All Kiel Select™ Cheddar cheeses are naturally aged.  Finally, each batch is hand inspected and selected before being packaged and shipped.

The plant where Kiel Select™ Cheddar cheese is produced is among the most honored cheese plants in the world.  It has been a consistent award winner since it opened in 1949.  In fact, Cheddar from the Kiel plant has taken first place in the Cheddar class for the past five biennial U.S. Cheese Championships, most recently in 2005.  The plant took the top prizes for the Cheddar and Aged Cheddar categories at the 2006 World Dairy Expo Cheese and Butter Contest.  In addition, the plant’s Cheddar entries took three of the top-four places (first, third and fourth) in the Cheddar cheese category of the 2006 Wisconsin State Fair Governor's Sweepstakes Cheese & Butter Contest.

Kiel Select™ Cheddar cheese will be available nationwide in response to consumer requests.  Research into the aged Cheddar market led management to conclude there was an unsatisfied consumer demand for a classic Wisconsin Cheddar cheese, one that is premium quality, wholesome and naturally aged.  Distribution agreements with Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart Supercenters are the first retailing phase of this expansion.  All 580 Sam’s Club stories across the United States carry the product, as do select Wal-Mart Supercenters in the upper Midwest.  Kiel Select™ Cheddar cheese will be available in additional retail grocery stores within the next six to 12 months.

Kiel Select™ Classic Wisconsin Cheddar cheese is a product of Kiel Cheese, LLC.  Known for its quality Cheddar, this plant has produced award-winning cheese since 1949.  It has maintained a tradition of quality and dependability through meticulous manufacturing.  Every block of Kiel Select™ Cheddar cheese is naturally aged and hand selected before leaving the plant.
